Making PORN: A SERIES

Stay tuned for additional material in the coming weeks!

Throughout the process of developing and filming our series, we had cameras rolling to capture the “making of” process. From behind-the-scenes laughter to inspirations from the past, join us as we go behind the camera to see the blood, sweat, tears and even a few laughs.

Believe it or not, the making of PORN: A SERIES wasn’t all about porn. Yes, the adult entertainment industry is a fascinating world that hides in plain sight, with so many stories, heartbreaking, hilarious, and human, a few of which inspired us. The bigger picture mission in making PORN: A SERIES was to break down traditional barriers of access in film and TV production. To put it simply, Hollywood and the “independent” film model work for a small minority of talented and creative individuals who manage to squeeze their way through the establishment.

At Hieronyvision, we believe that the rest of us need another path. We’re calling it the rise of independent TV.

Today, anyone who snaps a video of themselves singing in the car or waking up with perfect hair and skin tones is technically a filmmaker. Advances in technology have made camera equipment and sound gear affordable, while digital and streaming innovations allow for post-production and distribution from a desktop computer connected to the internet. This means a high quality feature-length film can be completed, from the writing to the distribution, for about the cost of one semester at a four-year college. No, kids, we’re not saying drop out of school… wait, maybe we are? What we’re really saying: it can be done.

This entire feature-length series was shot on essentially “no” budget, with just four essential crew members (director, assistant director, camera, sound) on set most days, locations that were easily accessible or loaned out and a cast that primarily consisted of first-time performers. It was edited in a basement office and is being distributed directly from this website. The result is a high quality feature-length story that could stand up to almost any million dollar plus budget in terms of production value. At times, we were forced to be creative in solving problems or call in favors with friends (at least, we hope they’re still our friends after this). That’s true of any project, whether the director is Steven Spielberg or Gus Greene.

Hieronyvision’s goal in this and future projects is to allow new and emerging directors, actors, writers, animators, editors – really, anyone who’s interested in visual storytelling and wants to do more than fetch coffee for some guy who was on Entourage – to tell their stories. Because that’s the other barrier we’re trying to break down. Like we said at the beginning, PORN: A SERIES isn’t all about porn, but we did cover a taboo subject in our first narrative series for a reason. It’s an interesting part of our culture that needs more attention. These are the types of stories that intrigue us, the ones that aren’t being told anywhere else. If almost everyone is making films, we want to watch something bold, daring and a little bit out there. But don’t tell us your story because you think it’s what we’re looking for. Tell your story because you need to, because you’re passionate about it and it’s meaningful to you. If we can make PORN in our basement, so can you!
